Ponponpon (And information about that story I promised)

The post is finally here! Remember when I said something about a Japanese viral video and my desire to post it on my blog? THE TIME HAS COME!

It’s really no secret that I love Japanese music. Any kind. In fact, I love almost everything about Japan. Why do I mention this? As a warning: This post involves Japanese music, and a particularly… creative type of imagery that is a trademark of Japan. I may post other videos in the future that are known as “wtf videos” but for now, I want to focus on this one specific song. First, I will show the original. I will translate it as well as I can, with a bit of help from the Internet’s thousand’s of translations… This song has gotten around, and for good reason. Many other artists have taken this song and put their own unique flavor to it, and that is why this song will always have a place in my heart. Personally, the original is one of my least favorite versions—however, the video makes it still worth the watch. This is one of about 10 songs that I listen to often as a pick-me-up… I hope you feel the same after this post. Please enjoy!

TRANSLATION for those of you who are curious (I got it from http://hanjadream.wordpress.com. I should change the word PON to Clap, because that is what it means. It also means bread, which makes sense in the video… but given the option between “bread way” and “clap way”… I… I’ll just leave it as Pon… LOL)

Maybe at that cross walk, you all will start skipping
And maybe you’ll join hands and stare at the sky in the towns center
Maybe in this town, you can grasp that chance anywhere
I have no choice but to move forward, it’s too early for tears! No! No!

Why don’t we all just pon pon!
Isn’t it boring not to? There’s no reason!
I put on my headphones and bounce to the rhythm
Come my way way, down my path

Pon pon! Go ahead, all these various things
Can you hear it? Your emotions are heightening
Poi poi! Where are the bad people? Just push them aside
Yes, now, let us go. Aah you make me happy.

Everyday pon, everytime is pon
I want to ride a merry-go-round
Everyday pon, everytime pon
But maybe that isn’t a good idea

Why don’t we all just pon pon!
Isn’t it boring not to? There’s no reason!
I put on my headphones and bounce to the rhythm
Come my way way, down my path

Pon pon way way way pon pon way pon way pon pon

Maybe at that cross walk, you all will start skipping
And maybe you’ll join hands and stare at the sky in the towns center
Maybe in this town, you can grasp that chance anywhere
I have no choice but to move forward, it’s too early for tears! No! No!

Pon pon! Advance, all these various things
Can you hear it? Your emotions are heightening
Poi poi! Where are the bad people? Just push them aside
Yes, now, let us go. Aah you make me happy.

Everyday pon, everytime pon
I want to ride a merry-go-round
Everyday pon, everytime pon
Maybe it’s really not so bad

Pon pon way way way pon pon way pon way pon pon
Way way pon pon pon way way pon way pon way way

BACK TO THE POST!

Anyone who thought the video was hilarious, I suggest looking up “Kids react to ponponpon” on youtube. It was very entertaining.

So you might be wondering, “Nina, why did you want me to watch/listen to that?” and I’ll point you to the videos posted below. Don’t sweat, though… None of them are as long as the original (which actually makes me sad, because there are some awesome ones!)

The one below this line was my first favorite, before I looked around a second time. It even has subtitles already, and an English part. However, please be patient with it and give it a chance if you don’t like screaming, which comes in about half-way through.

I hope you’re not tired of the song, already. Seriously, I could listen to the covers all in a row for hours. In fact, I am doing so whilst typing this.

Now for the second cover. At first, I found it hard to get into, and then suddenly, it swept me away during the chorus, and I find myself singing along when I can remember the lyrics.

This one is for those who like rock, but don’t like screaming.

Onwards, onwards, we trek through the covers. Can anyone agree at this point that the covers are amazing?

Next, I would like to appeal to those who like visual kei bands. Examples are Malice Mizer (who I admire, and will probably post more about in a future post), Kiryu (My Dragon—they sing the song Nijigen Complex, which has the most amusing and strange video…), and Lordi (they all dress up as monsters, and so I consider them a kei band). The following version also, I believe, would appeal people who like H.I.M, and/or Marilyn Manson.

There certainly is a wealth of different genres that have made covers of this song—and the list continues!

The following is my boyfriend’s personal favorite version. I appreciate it, although I’m not crazy for the genre overall.

On to the dubstep version! And to those of you who might know who/what this is: IT’S HATSUNE MIKU!

Now we arrive at my absolute favorite. DON’T TURN YOUR SPEAKERS UP, even though the girl at the beginning is so quiet. Just, please, trust me. I don’t want to explode your speakers or your brain.

As for why it’s my favorite, I get a somber feel to it, and that makes it the polar opposite of the original. It is definitely crazy—the two are so far apart that it’s hard to associate them. It keeps changing, as well, and that gives it a feeling that it is a story. It even gives me goosebumps—but that is coming from the person who gets goosebumps from Maximum the Hormone (another Japanese band that I love and will probably post videos of in the future—and the song I am talking about in particular, for those who know this band already, is Zetsubou Billy, the part right before they start talking/yelling in English).

Now, without further distraction: the final cover of Ponponpon I will post!

There you have it. If you could sit through the entire last version, you probably see why I like it so much. It has such a good feel to it, and it inspires me.

I would love to know which version you prefer! As per usual, I encourage you to comment on this post, and tell me what you think.

As for the reason I posted this at all, I will admit that the last cover has something to do with the story I will be serializing.

Yes, it’s true.

This scream version of Ponponpon is what inspired me to write the story to come.

No, the lyrics are not entirely what I’m meaning. The feel is what I intend to convey. And before anyone asks, no, the story will not be called ponponpon. I’m not that unoriginal.

In fact, the title will probably be one of the last things I think of for this story.

In conclusion, I hope to have everyone excited for the story. I intend to start it in the next post, so please be ready for it! Who knows how fast I’ll go through it, and a little reading at a time is better than sitting at your computer for three hours trying to catch up!

I sincerely hope you enjoy!

With love and anxiety,

Nina Crowlace
